It’s August on a college campus. In just a few days, students will return to campus. All normal events in higher education. Except this year, an abandoned toxic dry well is discovered outside a classroom building, uncapped and open for 30 years. The law is clear—it must be remediated immediately by environmental workers in protective “moon” suits.
Not exactly the picture you wanted to present to your new students. A media frenzy would only make it worse.
Funk Luetke Skunda worked with Nazarene College to demonstrate to the media that the College had nothing to hide, by taking them the story proactively, before they heard it anywhere else. We also helped to design factual and reassuring communications to internal audiences. In the end, the clean-up was a non-event…just the way everyone wanted it.
